Glass-ceramic: pretty but unforgiving
Glass-ceramic — and induction, which shares the same glass top — is the kitchen surface that worst tolerates smudges, burnt residue and limescale water marks. It's even worse when it accumulates micro-scratches: unlike residue, which cleans off, cumulative scratches kill the shine forever. The good news is that the right routine is short and daily — three minutes after each cook — and that with two dedicated tools (the scraper and a specific cream) you keep the hob like new for years.

Daily routine, after each cook
Stubborn burnt residue
For boiled-over milk, tomato sauce or caramelised sugary food, ordinary cleaning isn't enough. The right procedure starts by softening the stain with water and a little baking soda, left for 10–15 minutes so the starch or sugar dissolves. Then the specific glass-ceramic scraper comes in — a stainless steel blade held at 30 degrees to the surface, with a pushing motion (never a rotating one, which turns the blade edge). The scraper is the secret that separates an "easy" clean from a "tiring with scratch risk" one: without it, you're forced to scrub hard and increase the risk of micro-scratches. Found in home goods shops at CHF 8–15, lasts for years.
Monthly deep clean
Once a month, or whenever the hob looks hazy, the standard routine adds an extra step. Start with the normal clean using baking soda and water, then apply a specific glass-ceramic cream product (Cif Cream Vitroceramica, Bref Power and other specific brands) — half a teaspoon spread across the whole surface. Spread with a soft cloth, leave for one or two minutes, and polish with a dry cloth until shine returns. These products contain calibrated micro-abrasives that polish without scratching: the balance point is their real edge over generic products.
Limescale around the elements
On traditional glass-ceramic models, where the elements are visible as a brown-red glow around each zone, limescale builds up in the area where water boils and splashes onto the element. The fix is simple: white vinegar diluted 1:1 with water, sprayed onto the area, left for five minutes, then wiped with a microfibre cloth and rinsed with a damp cloth. On induction hobs this problem doesn't exist, because the element isn't exposed — the pan heats directly through magnetic induction and the hob stays cold in the unused zones.
