Bathroom mould: the cause is almost always ventilation

Nine times out of ten, black mould in shower silicone doesn't depend on the silicone's quality or the products you use, but on how well the bathroom breathes after showers. It's an important distinction: if you don't fix the ventilation problem, any treatment of the visible stain is cosmetic — the stain will come back within weeks. Solving the root cause is what makes every treatment described below effective and lasting.

In short

  • White vinegar 5% sprayed and left for an hour, then scrubbed: effective on fresh surface mould.
  • 3% hydrogen peroxide (pharmacy, CHF 3–5/L): more effective than vinegar on blackened silicone.
  • Baking soda + hydrogen peroxide as paste: whitens darkened grout (not silicone, too porous).
  • Without active ventilation and humidity below 60%, every treatment is temporary.

Where mould comes from: understand before acting

The WHO is clear: mould grows wherever humidity sits above 70% for hours at a time. In bathrooms the critical situations are always the same — shower or bath used without active ventilation (no window, no extractor), the window left closed after the shower, the extractor not working or undersized, water marks not dried on silicone or grout, damp towels hung without air circulation. If even one of these factors is present, accumulated humidity becomes the ideal substrate for spores. Without correcting the cause, any treatment of the stain is cosmetic.

Fresh surface mould: the vinegar procedure

More stubborn mould: hydrogen peroxide

For more persistent stains, 3% hydrogen peroxide — sold without prescription at the pharmacy at CHF 3–5/L — is more potent than vinegar. It's also the same active ingredient as many "natural whitener" detergents sold at a markup. Spray it pure on the stain, leave for thirty minutes, scrub and rinse. If after a first treatment the stain remains visible but lighter, repeat the procedure: peroxide works through progressive oxidation, and two cycles on medium mould give results a single cycle can't.

When DIY isn't enough: re-doing the silicone

If after two or three treatments the black stain remains or returns within two weeks, the silicone is structurally compromised: the spores have penetrated the porous material and no longer come out with surface-applied products. The solution is to redo it. Material cost is CHF 15–30 for sanitary mould-resistant silicone, time required is two-to-three hours for a standard bathroom, and difficulty is medium — the critical point is removing the old silicone cleanly with a cutter or trimming knife, because residue beneath the new layer becomes the starting point of future mould.

The procedure in short: removal of the old silicone, deep cleaning of the area (hydrogen peroxide + complete drying), application of new silicone with cartridge and gun, smoothing with a wet finger. If you'd rather not, there are specialist trades or the Angolli service further down.

What never to do

Preventing mould: ventilation, drying, humidity

Prevention is where you really win the problem. Active ventilation during the shower and the 10–15 minutes after is the most important factor — the extractor needs to stay on, and where there's no extractor the window needs to open for 5–10 minutes immediately after. Leaving the bathroom door open when the bathroom isn't in use also helps avoid humidity stagnation.

On drying surfaces, a squeegee passed on shower walls after each use is thirty seconds of work that eliminates 90% of limescale and most of the deposits that feed mould. Towels should be hung on the heated towel rail or the rail, never rolled up damp in the bathroom.

For ambient humidity it's worth spending CHF 15–25 on a hygrometer: indispensable for understanding the real situation, because "feels humid" and "is over 70%" are different things. The optimal target for the rest of the home is 40–50%, in the bathroom up to 60% only right after a shower.

And on silicone, preventive replacement every 5–7 years is good practice even without visible mould, because silicone loses elasticity and cracks over time. "Mould-resistant" sanitary silicones with built-in biocide last noticeably longer before starting to blacken.

When to rely on a professional

When to see a doctor

Mould isn't only a cosmetic problem. The WHO documents clear health risks: worsening of asthma with more frequent attacks, chronic rhinitis, recurrent bronchitis in young children, allergic reactions. If there's widespread mould at home (over 0.5 m²) and someone has chronic respiratory symptoms, talking to a family doctor or an allergist matters. Often, removal and remediation of the source resolve symptoms that have dragged on for years and were attributed to something else.

Perguntas frequentes

Inoltre Suva sconsiglia uso prolungato in bagni piccoli senza ventilazione (vapori irritanti).
Quando devo sostituire i silikoni?
Quando il nero è penetrato e non si rimuove con i metodi sopra, oppure quando il silikone è crepato/distaccato. Sostituzione costa CHF 30-80 di materiale + 2-3 ore di lavoro. Vita media silikone in bagno: 5-7 anni.
