Dog or cat at home: cleaning becomes a different story

Having pets at home is wonderful, and it changes the way the home needs cleaning. Without specific tools and routines, the combination of fur, odours and organic residue turns the living room into an environment that's not great for anyone spending time there — particularly children and the elderly — and there's no scented product that solves the problem at the source. The good news is that with the right vacuum, an animal brush and a weekly routine of a few hours you keep the home clean and the animal where it should be: indoors with us, not exiled to the balcony.

In short

  • Vacuum with HEPA H13+ filter and a turbobrush nozzle for fabrics: indispensable, not optional.
  • Vacuuming 2–3 times a week in walked zones, weekly for sofas and master bedroom.
  • Brushing the animal 2–3 times a week outside the home cuts hair landing on furniture by 70%.
  • Baking soda + vacuuming on fabrics neutralises organic odours (urine, sebaceous glands).

Essential tools

For homes with animals, an ordinary vacuum isn't enough. The configuration that works has four characteristics: a HEPA H13 or higher filter that traps allergens and microparticles, a motorised turbobrush nozzle with a roller that lifts hair embedded in fabrics, a dedicated upholstery nozzle for sofas, mattresses and chairs, and a long flexible hose (over 1.5 m) to reach under furniture. The reference brands for homes with pets are Dyson V series with pet attachment, Miele Cat&Dog and Bosch BGS5 Pet.

Three complementary tools cost little and do a lot. The lint roller at CHF 5–10 with replaceable sheets is perfect for clothes and smooth-surface cushions. The rubber pet-hair glove (CHF 8–15), lightly damp, attracts hair through static attraction with surprising effectiveness. And the pet-specific brush — FURminator for long-haired dogs, Kong Zoom Groom for short-haired dogs and cats — drastically reduces shed hair, and it's the central tool of the next section.

Weekly routine for homes with pets

The daily routine, Monday-Friday, is about ten minutes a day: litter trays, water and food bowls washed every day; quick vacuum of walked zones (entrance, corridors, kitchen); lint roller on chairs and sofa if pets have been on them; "incident" clean with enzymatic product if needed. Short gestures that prevent the build-up that becomes heavy.

On Saturday or Sunday, 60–90 minutes covers the rest. Full home vacuum with HEPA and turbobrush; sofa and cushion sanitisation with the procedure in the next section; pet laundry (bed, blanket, fabric cover); human laundry from "contaminated zones" (pillowcases, sofa covers) at 60 °C; and bowl cleaning with baking soda and soap.

Natural sanitisation of sofas and mattresses

Sofas are the critical point, because they absorb hair and organic odours and guests sit there.

Eliminating odours (urine, organic residue)

Cat or dog urine on fabrics is one of the few cases where reaction time really matters. Blot at once without rubbing: absorbent paper first to lift the surface liquid, then a solution of water and baking soda as paste with a few drops of vinegar, blot, leave for 5–10 minutes, and blot again with a dry cloth.

For stains that have already dried, specific enzymatic products (Urine-Off, Bactekiller, Bissell Pet Stain) are the only really effective solution: they contain enzymes that digest urine proteins instead of masking the odour. They cost more but make the difference on a weeks-old stain that comes back the first humid day. On parquet or stone, blot at once and use only water with neutral soap — no acidic products on porous floors, because they make things worse. For dark stains set in the wood, professional treatment is needed (see parquet cleaning).

Brushing — the underrated secret

The single gesture that makes the biggest difference in a home with pets is brushing the animal two-to-three times a week outside the home — on the balcony, in the garden, in the hallway with a sack. For a long-haired dog five-to-ten minutes, for a short-haired dog three-to-five, for a cat five-to-ten even though "they clean themselves" (they do clean themselves, but they leave the hair on your furniture). The result is that 70% of shed hair ends up in the brush rather than on furniture and rugs — it's the single most effective intervention, more than any better vacuum.

On the animal's own bath, frequencies differ for dogs and cats. Dogs should be washed once a month or when visibly dirty: too often strips the natural lipid layer of the skin. Cats generally don't need a bath (they wash themselves), except for medical reasons or exceptional dirt. The products must be pet-specific shampoos, never human shampoos because the pH isn't right. For allergic animals, hypoallergenic vet-certified shampoos exist.

Common mistakes

When DIY isn't enough

Allergies: when to see a doctor

If anyone in the household with the pet develops a persistent cough, chronic rhinitis, atopic eczema or asthma, an allergy test is worth considering — the allergist or family doctor can prescribe a blood or skin test specific to animal allergies (dog, cat). Diagnosis is simple, and contrary to what people think, a diagnosed allergy doesn't necessarily mean having to separate from the animal: rigorous cleaning with HEPA vacuuming, weekly 60 °C laundry and textile sanitisation makes the allergy livable in many cases.
