Genuinely ecological cleaning — not just a slogan

"Eco-friendly" is one of the most abused words in detergent marketing. To cut through the noise you need verified certifications (EU Ecolabel, Nordic Swan, Cradle to Cradle), documented natural products, and less choice among "presumed green" detergents with green-coloured bottles.

In short

  • Most reliable certification: EU Ecolabel (Regulation 66/2010), scientific verification + annual audit.
  • The 4 documented natural products: citric acid (E330), baking soda, percarbonate, Marseille soap.
  • Microfibre + reverse osmosis (deionised water) replace 60-70% of chemical detergents on smooth surfaces.
  • Cost: a certified product is not necessarily more expensive. The difference varies by product: compare the price per dose, not per bottle.
  • Main cleaning-company impact: transport + products. A credible 'carbon neutral' claim needs measurement (GHG Protocol), active reduction and certified offsets for the residual, with the method disclosed.

Certifications that count (and ones that don't)

EU Ecolabel — the European reference

EU eco-label (flower with stars) regulated by Regulation EU 66/2010. For hard-surface cleaners (Decision EU 2017/1217), verifies:

  • Biodegradability: all surfactants must be readily biodegradable per OECD 301 tests
  • Reduced aquatic toxicity: maximum concentrations of freshwater-harmful substances
  • Restrictions on hazardous substances: no carcinogens (CMR), no known endocrine disruptors
  • Packaging: recycled and/or refillable
  • Annual independent audits

Other serious certifications

  • Nordic Swan: Scandinavian equivalent, often stricter criteria
  • Cradle to Cradle: full life-cycle certification

"Green" labels with no certified value

  • Generic "bio" (in detergents has no legal meaning)
  • "Natural" (organic chemistry = even synthetic compounds can be called "natural")
  • "Eco" without a certifying body
  • Green bottle, stylised leaf = graphics, not a guarantee

The 4 natural products with documented efficacy

The microfibre + osmosis "duo"

For smooth surfaces (glass, counters, mirrors, tiles), a quality microfibre cloth + deionised water replaces most chemical detergents. Studies in healthcare have shown microfibre removes 99%+ of bacteria and viruses with water alone, through mechanical action and electrostatic attraction.

For professional use: reverse-osmosis vacuum + squeegee = perfectly clean glass with no chemical, zero residue.

Honest comparison: ecological vs. conventional

"Carbon neutral" — what it takes before anyone can claim it

For a cleaning company, the carbon footprint concentrates in three areas:

  1. Transport (40-60% of total emissions): vehicle choice, route optimisation, electric/hybrid options
  2. Products (20-30%): production, transport, packaging
  3. Energy (office + facilities) (10-20%)

For a company to credibly claim carbon neutrality, all three of these steps are needed:

  • Active reduction (optimised fleet, refillable concentrated products, renewable energy)
  • Measurement (GHG Protocol audit, Scopes 1, 2 and 3)
  • Offsetting the residual via Gold Standard-certified projects or equivalent

Offsetting comes last: without measurement and reduction it does not make a service carbon neutral. Be wary of "carbon neutral" claims without a disclosed methodology and a named verifier.

Myths to dispel

"All-natural = safe" False. Citric acid in high concentration irritates skin and eyes. Essential oils are notified REACH allergens. Safety is verified on the safety data sheet, not on natural/synthetic origin.

"Mixing natural products is OK" False. Vinegar + baking soda neutralise each other (acid-base reaction): you get salty water, you lose both effects. Vinegar + bleach = chlorine gas, toxic. Interactions need to be checked.

"Microfibre doesn't disinfect" False. Microfibre mechanically removes bacteria and viruses with documented efficacy above 99% in healthcare studies. To chemically disinfect (kill what wasn't removed) you need specific disinfectants — but in domestic cleaning, mechanical removal covers almost everything.

Eccezioni: alcune disinfezioni specifiche (es. ospedaliere) ancora richiedono prodotti non-Ecolabel.
Cos'è la certificazione Ecolabel UE?
Etichetta ecologica europea (Reg.
