Signals your washing machine needs a deep clean

The signs are unambiguous and usually cumulative:

  • Musty smell after the rinse, or on freshly washed items

Natural method 1 — citric acid (our default)

Citric acid (E330) is a weak organic acid, fully biodegradable (ECHA REACH dossier) and harmless to wastewater treatment plants. It tackles three things at once: dissolves limescale, drops microbial load and neutralises odours.

Empty and inspect

Make sure the drum is empty. Open the door gasket and check for mould, hair or solid residue. Pull out the detergent drawer and empty it. A quick visual triage tells you whether a basic clean is enough or whether you need to disassemble the drawer.

Measure the citric acid

For a 7-9 kg machine:

  • 150 g straight into the drum
  • 50 g into the main detergent compartment

Smaller machines (5-6 kg) → 100 + 30 g. Larger 10 kg models → 180 + 60 g.

Run a 60°C cottons cycle

Pick "cottons 60°C" with no pre-wash and (if available) no final spin — gentler on the gasket. No clothes inside, no other product. At 60°C, the heated citric acid solution dissolves limescale on the heating element and inside the hoses.

Clean the door gasket

Mix a 5% citric-acid solution (50 g per litre of warm water). With a microfibre cloth and an old toothbrush, work every fold of the gasket. Push hard on dark spots — but don't reach for bleach, which damages the rubber. Wipe dry with a clean cloth.

Pull the pump filter

The filter usually sits behind a small flap at the bottom front. Lay a towel and put a shallow tray underneath (water will come out). Unscrew, remove anything stuck (coins, hair, hairpins), rinse under running water, and only refit when it's fully dry. This is the step most online guides skip — and it's the leading cause of stagnant water and persistent odour.

Leave everything open

Keep the door and detergent drawer open for at least 1-2 hours. The golden rule: leftover humidity is what feeds mould and bacteria. Ideally leave the door slightly ajar between every wash from now on.

Natural method 2 — white vinegar (with a caveat)

White vinegar (5-6% acetic acid) works but is harsher on the gasket if used often. Reserve it for occasional cleaning (3-4× per year) or when citric acid isn't on hand.

Dose: 500 ml directly into the drum + cottons 90°C cycle, no pre-wash.

When DIY isn't enough — the professional route

Can I use bleach instead of citric acid?

Can vinegar and bleach be used together?
